Tarnish God’s Character

It is easy for us to tarnish God’s character because He never argues back; He never tries to defend or vindicate Himself.

“He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.” Isaiah 53:7

Peer Pressure

I was at a trade convention this week with a lot of people I have known for a long time
many of which are friends. There were also a lot of important retail buyers there
that purchase my clients’ products and are important to my business and livelyhood.

One of my friends/buyers emailed me a video that she said was the funniest thing she had
ever seen. She asked me to share it with all my friends  because they would love it.
I started watching it expecting it would indeed by funny.  It turned out to be a very nasty, inappropriate video that degraded women, marriage and intimacy.

I didn’t say anything to her but I did not forward the video.  But, there was a time
that I can remember when I would have found this video funny and gladly shared it with, at least, “select people”…..those people who I prejudged would put their beliefs and faith aside for a moment and laugh at this very crude video.  Plus then I could have joked to them about
how funny it was and we all get a big laugh, which I would have enjoyed because it would
of kind of made me the center of attention since I was the one sharing the video.

Several things about this incident are important for me to note.

First, I am embarrassed that at one time, regardless of what I “thought” my faith was,
I would have gladly shared this filth to get attention. But I am relieved now that I know
better.

Second, I realized that when I would have sent other inappropriate things and jokes, etc., to
friends, in the past I was very negatively influencing them.  The reason I know that now is
that when I  got this email video last week, I wanted to impress the person who sent it to
me because it was an important buyer. So I felt a lot of pressure to forward it. I guess
my point is, I never realized how peer pressure and my actions still today can have a
very negative effect on those I know. I always thought peer pressure was only for teenagers……not so.

Third, I am disappointed that I did not say something to the person who sent me that
video this time. I should have said please don’t send me anything like that again
because it is offensive. I was afraid saying that might somehow negatively effect our professional relationship. I feared worse case, if I embarrassed her, she would try to
punish me somehow through work.

I know Jesus is disappointed in me as well for not speaking up. I could have done it in
a very low key, quiet and soft way to try to avoid embarrasing her. It might have been
good for her to hear someone tell her the truth. If I had it to do over, I would speak to
her about it. But this opportunity has passed and I probably won’t even see her again
until next summer at a trade convention.

I am going to pray about this so that hopefully the next time I have an opportunity to
show my faith, I won’t take the coward’s way out.

Cut your throat

If you have a sharp
tongue, be careful you
don’t cut your own throat.

“All kinds of animals,
birds, reptiles and creatures
of the sea are being tamed
and have been tamed by
man, but no man can
tame the tongue.  It is
a restless evil, full of
deadly poison.”  James 3:7-8

One of us

by John Fischer

Reconciliation. It is and has been the sweeping expanse of God’s movement
through history. Satan and sin separates; God brings back together.

God is in the reconciling business. First, He’s reconciling the world to Himself
in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:19). Secondly, He’s reconciling us to each other.

“So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who
were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither
Jew nor Greek, neither slave nor free, neither male nor female, [neither Republican
nor Democrat, (and anything else you may want to put in here that can divide us,
like Catholic and Protestant, home-schooler and public schooler, Caucasian
and African-American, Hispanic and Asian, mega-church and home church)]
for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” (Galatians 3:26-28)

Christ Jesus creates family. He wants us all together. He wants us to resolve
conflict, find common ground, downplay our differences, put ourselves in
each other’s shoes, and learn how to be all things to all people. And by the way,
that is not Christian people he’s talking about being all things to. Paul says he
wants to be all things to all people that he might by all means save some, so he’s
talking about people who are not saved. He’s talking about so identifying with
unbelievers that his identification with them will help them eventually come to
a place of belief. That would mean understanding why people don’t believe instead
of calling them out for not believing. This erases the “us/them” kind of mentality
common in so many Christian circles — an “us/them” mentality that has given
us a bad name among unbelievers.

It’s “us and them” that makes us judgmental. It’s “us and them” that sets us apart
in our own minds. It’s “us and them” that always leaves someone out. It’s “us and
them” that makes us haughty.

I have an idea. How about we just do away with “them” altogether as a designation
at least in your thinking. Try it for a while. There is no “them;” there is only “us.”
God loves us. Christ died for us. He has a plan for us. His grace and mercy extends
to us, and as far as we are concerned, “us” is everybody. And if there is a “them,”
somewhere outside of God’s grace, I don’t know who they are, anyway, and I
won’t, because that is not for me to know. Only my heavenly Father knows.
Therefore as far as I am concerned, there is only us, and everyone is one of us.

Life of Purpose

The purpose of life is
a life of purpose.

have for you,’ declares the
Lord, ‘plans to prosper you
and not to harm you, plans
to give you hope and a
future.’”  Jeremiah 29:11

Successful people

Successful people do what most people don’t feel like doing.

“So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded.
You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God
you will receive what He has promised.” Hebrews 10:35-36

Creator of Heaven and Earth

While in Seattle and British Columbia last week on vacation we saw untouched
and preserved beaches, Killer Orca Whales, Snow-Capped Mountains and
pristene Rain Forests in Olympic National Park. How can one see these magnificent
creations and not Know  in their heart that there is ONE TRUE, ALL POWERFUL
AND OMNIPOTENT GOD Who Created it all!
PRAISE BE TO GOD!

Grudge

The heaviest thing to carry is a
grudge.

“Therefore, if you are offering
your gift at the altar and
there remember that your
brother has something
against you, leave
your gift there in front of the
altar.  First go and be reconciled
to your brother; then come and
offer your gift.”

Matthew 5:23-24
