GOD’s Busy

If you don’t know GOD, don’t make stupid
 remarks!!!!!!!

A United States Marine was attending some
college courses between assignments. He had
completed missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. One of
the courses had a professor who was an avowed
atheist and a member of the ACLU.
One day the professor shocked the class when he
came in.. He looked to the ceiling and flatly
stated, ‘God, if you are real, then I want you to
knock me off this platform. I’ll give you exactly 15
 minutes.’
The lecture room fell silent. You could hear a
pin drop. Ten minutes went by and the professor
proclaimed, ‘Here I am God. I’m still waiting..’
It got down to the last couple of minutes when
the Marine got out of his chair, went up to the
professor, and cold-cocked him ; knocking him off the
platform. The professor was out cold. The Marine
went back to his seat and sat there, silently. The
other students were shocked and stunned and sat
 there looking on in silence.
The professor eventually came to, noticeably
shaken, looked at the Marine and asked, ‘What the
heck is the matter with you? Why did you do that?’
The Marine calmly replied, ‘God was too busy
today protecting America’s soldiers who are
protecting your right to say stupid stuff and act
like an idiot. So, He sent me.

What others think

All too often I am more worried about what others think of me than what God thinks of me.

‘Lord, what would you have me to do?’

by John Fischer

My wife stopped me short the other day when she asked me a very basic question for which I had no answer. It involved an assumption that I have been operating under for some time. She asked me if I had checked in with God about it. I was dumbfounded. Well, of course God wants me to do this; it’s what I’ve been doing all along. Yes, but did I get it from Him, or is this what I want to do and assume He is going along with it? The fact that I had to think about my answer told most of the story.

It should be fundamental to every follower of Christ to ask, “Does God want me to do this?”

Much has been made of the question: “What would Jesus do?” But the question is largely irrelevant. Not only is it pure speculation, it has nothing to do with me. I’m not Jesus. Even if I could determine what Jesus would do in a certain situation, what would that have to do with me? I need to find out what God wants me to do.

We need to learn to ask this question of ourselves and of those we love. Either way it will take a good deal of faith. Yesterday our daughter called us from Colorado facing a big decision and seeking our advice. Though we had strong feelings about what we thought she should do, Marti wisely said instead, “What is God telling you? Ask Him, and you will know.” I thought that was pretty trusting, and pretty brave of her. It’s much easier to try and control and manipulate someone than to genuinely send them to the Lord

Now I know what you’re thinking: “So how does God tell you? How do you find out what He wants you to do?” Why not try asking Him? I honestly think we are so caught up in trying to figure out how to find the will of God, that we never simply go to Him and ask Him what it is! I mean there are volumes of books on the subject of finding the will of God, when the answer basically comes down to asking Him.

Jesus was always telling us that we lack because we fail to ask. Why wouldn’t that apply to the basic questions of our lives? “Lord, what would you have me to do?” The answer may take some time. It may take some wrestling. But that’s better than living on assumptions. Ask me, I know.

….what we are

The most important thing we put into any relationship is not what we say or what we do, but what we are.

“The man of integrity walks securely, but he who takes crooked paths will be found out.” Proverbs 10:9

Roll up your sleeves

When it’s time to do the really hard work, some turn up their sleeves, some turn up their noses, and some don’t turn up at all.

“The sluggard craves and gets nothing, but the desires of the diligent are fully satisfied.”

Proverbs 13:4

What’s the rain for?

by John Fischer

Last week we had an unusually early rainstorm for southern California. Houses that had survived the fires now had to contend with mudslides with no vegetation to hold back the earth. Though we had to feel sorry for these folks, in the bigger scheme of things it was a welcomed respite to the drought conditions that have been prevailing here for a couple years now.

But the prize for the best perspective on this came from Chandler. He woke up, looked outside, and announced, “God made the water to come down to make the Christmas trees perfect for Christmas night.”

Now how is that for an eight-year-old take on Christmas?

We have all this sacred/secular baggage to deal with around the holidays. There’s so much that goes into both the commercialism of Christmas and the bashing of the commercialism of Christmas that it is hard sometimes to simply enjoy the holiday. We can let the expectations get the best of us and freak out over not being able to fulfill them. How do you deal with Santa, the elves, the baby in the manger, the angelic choirs, the Christmas tree, the reindeer, the Grinch, Ebenezer Scrooge, all those countless Christmas specials, and even a Starbucks Christmas blend? (I tried it; it didn’t taste like Christmas to me.) How much is too much? How little is not enough? Where does real begin and fantasy leave off? When you believe in Christmas, what do you believe? And most importantly: Where is God in all of this?

Well personally, I think that Chandler’s got the answer. “God made the water to come down to make the Christmas trees perfect for Christmas night.”

Everything that we will experience leading up to and including Christmas that is good can be considered a gift of God. He is the bringer of all good gifts. “Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.” (James 1:17)

So does God want the trees to be perfect for Christmas? Why wouldn’t He? Jesus announced that it was party time while He was here with his disciples, “How can the guests of the bridegroom fast while he is with them?” (Mark 2:19) His first miracle kept a party going. So how can we not celebrate, especially when even the secular world recognizes at least part of Christmas as the celebration of Christ’s birth?

As always, what is required for this is the heart of a child. Children see the kingdom of God much more easily than we do. That’s why they are welcome there. They don’t have any artificial lines down through their experience separating the sacred from the secular. They are simple enough to think that if it is raining, that’s God making sure the trees will all be perfect for Christmas.
